Leadership: A Journey of Trust, Service, and Legacy

Leadership is not a position to be attained, but a trust to be honoured. Every opportunity to lead has taught me that institutions are not transformed merely through policies and structures, but through people united by shared purpose, mutual trust, and sincere service. The reflections in this pillar are drawn from my journey of leading a faculty, a campus, and a university-wide ecosystem—experiences that continue to shape my understanding of leadership and legacy.

A Reflection on Leadership

Throughout my academic journey, I have come to realise that leadership is not about authority, but about responsibility. Every leadership role entrusted to me brought a different set of challenges, yet they all shared one common purpose, to create an environment where people could learn, grow, contribute, and flourish.

As I moved from leading a faculty, to serving as Rector of a university campus, and later as Assistant Vice Chancellor, my perspective gradually evolved. I learned that buildings do not create institutions; people do. Policies alone do not transform universities; purpose, trust, collaboration, and shared vision do.

Looking back, I no longer see these appointments merely as positions I once held, but as chapters that shaped my understanding of leadership, service, and stewardship. I see them as chapters of learning. Each chapter taught me new lessons about listening before leading, serving before directing, empowering rather than controlling, and building systems that continue to benefit others long after our own roles have ended.

Leadership, therefore, is not measured by the positions we occupy, but by the lives we influence, the opportunities we create, and the legacies we leave behind.

Leading a Faculty

Dean, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

My journey as Dean reinforced a simple but enduring lesson: a faculty flourishes when its people flourish together. Beyond policies and strategic plans, I sought to foster a sense of belonging, mutual respect, and shared ownership, where every academic and staff member recognised that they were part of something greater than themselves. Leadership, to me, was about bringing people together around a common vision, celebrating collective achievements, and creating a culture where success was not measured by individual accomplishments, but by what we achieved together as one faculty.

Leading a Campus

Leading a campus broadened my perspective on leadership. While leading a faculty was about building a strong academic family, leading a campus was about bringing many academic families together as one community. It taught me the importance of fostering a shared identity, encouraging collaboration across faculties, and creating a culture where knowledge, expertise, and resources are willingly shared for the greater good. A campus flourishes when people move beyond individual interests, embrace collective responsibility, and take pride in contributing to the success of the university as a whole.

Leading an Educational Ecosystem

Assistant Vice Chancellor (Entrepreneurship)

Leading MASMED deepened my conviction that entrepreneurship is fundamentally about developing people before developing enterprises. Sustainable enterprises are built upon individuals who are grounded in values, equipped with knowledge, inspired to innovate, and committed to creating meaningful impact for society. This conviction inspired the development of the Taqwa-Driven Business Model Canvas (TD-BMC™), a framework that integrates ethical intention (taqwa), entrepreneurial thinking, and sustainable impact. More than a business model, TD-BMC™ embodies my aspiration to nurture entrepreneurs who create not only economic value, but also lasting benefit for humanity.

Looking back, I realise that my greatest achievement has never been a position or a title. Rather, it has been the privilege of serving alongside remarkable colleagues, mentoring future leaders, and contributing, in whatever small way I could, to institutions that continue to grow and flourish. If any legacy remains from this journey, I hope it is remembered not through the offices I once held, but through the people who were inspired to learn, to serve, and to lead with purpose.
